Pilot Plant

The processing of free-flowing solids such as industrial or natural products requires a deep understanding of the process. Many materials behave differently when briquetting / compacting or crushing Unpredictable – simulations are often insufficient. Köppern enables tests with customer materials under industrial conditions at the Freiberg Technical Center. This provides us with reliable data for the design of your processes, machines, and plants.
Your advantages

Industrial tests in the briquetting/compacting/crushing pilot plants are used to determine and test standard parameters for material processing, such as mixing, drying, or dosing, as well as for handling the input materials. State-of-the-art technologies and practical tests are combined to achieve maximum energy savings while maintaining consistently high product quality. In this way, we develop economically and ecologically optimized solutions that reduce long-term operating costs and support sustainability goals.

We can simulate both hot and cold briquetting processes in detail. This enables precise analysis of material behavior, binder effect, and briquette quality even before implementation on an industrial scale. You benefit from sound insights into process optimization and significantly reduced investment and operating risks.


Our test facilities offer the possibility to physically carry out compaction and granulation processes, but also to simulate them numerically. With our specially developed simulation software "KoeSim," we can analyze material properties and process parameters in a targeted manner. This enables our customers to check the suitability of their input materials and to optimize the production process in advance in terms of efficiency and product quality. This simulation-based approach minimizes development risks and enables precise design of the subsequent industrial plant. 


Our test facilities enable us to simulate grinding, classification, and screening processes. These tests help to evaluate and optimize the efficiency of grinding circuits in advance. As a customer, you benefit from in-depth knowledge of process control, optimal plant design, and reduced investment risks.

Centralized data collection of all important process parameters enables evaluation of the entire process. This allows precise analysis of correlations between material properties, machine parameters, and product quality. This provides us with a reliable database for optimizing processes and efficiently designing your industrial plants.

Köppern has been an affiliated institute since 2003. an affiliated institute of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg. Affiliated institutes are independent research institutions that collaborate with the TU Bergakademie Freiberg on a long-term basis and complement the university's teaching and research programs. Recognition as an affiliated institute is granted in accordance with the Saxon Higher Education Act (§ 102). This close cooperation gives us access to the latest scientific know-how and state-of-the-art research in the field of processing and briquetting technology. The collaboration thus promotes the joint development of innovative processes and practical solutions for complex customer requirements.
